The Genesis of the Project
The initiative was born out of the need to understand the impact
of the COVID-19 pandemic on student learning outcomes. With schools shut down and
traditional modes of education disrupted,
it became essential to gauge the educational gaps that had developed over this period. This
assessment was aimed at establishing a baseline for the students' current educational
standing, particularly
focusing on critical areas such as mathematics and language for students in Class 4, 6, and
9.
The Implementation:
Overcoming Challenges
The logistical challenges of conducting such a massive assessment in a state with diverse geographical terrains were significant. CG deployed 1,900 tablets across the state, ensuring that the technology reached even the most remote areas. The involvement of various stakeholders, including educators, administrators, and local communities, played a crucial role in the successful execution of the assessment.
The engagement and cooperation of these groups were pivotal in achieving an impressive 83% participation rate, a testament to the commitment of the Himachal Pradesh educational community.
Innovative Methodologies
and Technologies
Swift Insights' approach to the assessment was rooted in scientific methodologies like Item Response Theory and the Rasch Model, ensuring a high level of accuracy and reliability in the results. Jairaj, Co-Founder & Managing Director at ConveGenius, emphasized the technological innovation at the heart of this project.
Himachal’s tab-based assessment is the first time that an education assessment has been conceptualized and implemented across the state using tablets. It is a technology-led disruption in the assessment segment, moving away from the traditional pen and paper methods which took 2-3 months.”
Jairaj, Co-Founder & Managing Director at ConveGenius
Samar Bajaj, Director of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation India, shared his perspective on the larger implications of the project:
The large-scale assessments have provided a ‘system-level’ view of learning and identifying trends, leading to interventions like an intensive catch-up program, each student’s workbooks, and a digital content repository.
